FAQs
-
What is Premature Ejaculation?
-
Premature ejaculation is ejaculation occurring without control,
on or shortly after vaginal penetration and before the subject
wishes it.
-
Who does it effect?
-
Premature Ejaculation is the most common Sexual Dysfunction,
affecting approximately 25 - 35% of the adult male population
between the ages of 20-59.
-
What is the difference between Erectile Dysfunction and Premature Ejaculation?
-
Erectile Dysfunction effects a man’s ability to obtain and maintain an erection. Premature Ejaculation
describes a condition of ejaculating without control, often times before the subject wishes to. One
significant difference between the diseases is who is effected. Erectile dysfunction effects men more
significantly as they get older, due to diminished blood circulation and other contributing age related
conditions. On the other hand, published prevalency studies demonstrate that Premature Ejaculation
effects a relatively constant 20 - 30% of men in their 20’s,30’s, 40’s and 50’s, indicating that men may be
born with the condition and it appears to remain with them throughout life.
-
Is it possible to suffer from Erectile Dysfunction and Premature Ejaculation?
-
Yes, this is very common.
-
What causes Premature Ejaculation?
-
The medical community has identified several potential causes of Premature Ejaculation including
an inadequate release of serotonin, behavioral factors including stress and anxiety, and anatomical
factors including a hypersensitivity in the male penis. Men with premature ejaculation have a
heightened sensory response to penile stimulation compared to normal men. According to published
studies in the Journal of Urology, a significant contributing factor to premature ejaculation is
hypersensitivity in the male penis.
-
What is the current Treatment for Premature Ejaculation recommended by physicians?
-
The currently accepted treatment methods include medical therapy, behavioral therapy and topical
therapy. The standard medical therapy for Premature Ejaculation has been selective serotonin reuptake
inhibitors,(anti-depressant drugs) which are plagued by numerous problems. In order to optimize
efficacy, the medication must be taken daily. Side effects including dry mouth, drowsiness, nausea and
decreased libido are common. Serious drug interactions including headache, nausea, sweating and
dizziness in mild cases, and hyperthermia, rigidity and delirium in severe cases exist. These medications
are not approved by the FDA for this indication. However, they are the standard prescribed treatment by
physicians for PE; and are significantly more costly than topical therapy. Behavioral therapy has also
been used in this condition for decades but has had poor acceptance due to the high cost and limited
availability of well trained sex therapists. This approach is not suitable for men without a steady and
highly committed partner. Data has shown that behavioral therapy is rarely successful in the long term
and most benefits are lost within 3 years of treatment without regular follow up therapies.
-
What is Topical Therapy and why is it effective in treating Premature Ejacualtion?
-
Topical therapy for the treatment of premature ejaculation was first reported in 1943. Men with
premature ejaculation have a heightened sensory response to penile stimulation compared to normal
men. The goal of topical therapy is to decrease penile sensitivity to that seen in men without the
condition. This results in a normalization of the ejaculatory response.
