Can Premature Ejaculation Cause Infertility?

It seems to stand to reason that PE is linked to fertility, but is that truth or myth? Learn how PE and fertility are linked, and what you can do about it.

Premature Ejaculation and Infertility

Old wives’ tales are sayings that were often considered true, despite a lack of facts around them. You might have heard as a teen that too-frequent masturbation would make you blind or put hair on your palms. Of course, neither of these are true, but they might have been an effort by frustrated moms to get their teenage children out of the locked bathroom more frequently.

We worry about the consequences of things we do when it comes to fertility — and there are many old wives’ tales associated with it. If couples are having trouble conceiving, many will try just about anything to make pregnancy happen, from special positions to waiting until a full moon to make love.

Worried that an existing complication like premature ejaculation can affect your fertility? You might be onto something, but the answer isn’t black and white: Premature ejaculation alone cannot directly cause infertility. But if a couple is not getting pregnant and the man is experiencing premature ejaculation, the two  problems may be related on a deeper level.

How PE is Linked to Conception Problems

While premature ejaculation has not been linked to causing infertility, it can be a symptom of infertility. One reason a couple cannot conceive could be sperm’s inability to get where they need to in order to fertilize the egg.

The Mayo Clinic notes that infertility can be linked to “problems with sexual intercourse,” including:

  • Trouble maintaining an erection sufficient for sex (erectile dysfunction)

  • Premature ejaculation

  • Painful intercourse

  • Anatomical abnormalities like a urethral opening beneath the penis (hypospadias)

  • Psychological or relationship problems that interfere with sex

Premature Ejaculation Is Not the Only Link to Fertility Issues

Ejaculation’s function is to deliver sperm to the vagina for means of reproduction, and ejaculating prematurely could impede that process and, in turn, affect impregnation.

But there are many factors that can affect a couple’s ability to conceive, and the Mayo Clinic notes that up to 15% of couples experience problems getting pregnant (and a German study found that only 38 percent of women actually got pregnant within a month of first trying to conceive). The causes of those issues could be singular or many, from prescription or supplement interference with sperm to low sperm count.

“Male infertility is due to low sperm production, abnormal sperm function or blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm,” according to the Mayo Clinic. “Illnesses, injuries, chronic health problems, lifestyle choices and other factors can play a role in causing male infertility.”

If you and your partner have questions about or problems conceiving, you should consult your doctor and talk about issues that could be at play. It could be a simple fix with long-lasting results.
