Sexual Dysfunction

Causes of Sexual Dysfunction in Men

The rate of sexual dysfunction is highly prevalent in both sexes, ranging from 10 - 52% of men and 25 - 63% of women. Most medical institutions classify both male and female sexual dysfunctions in four categories:   Sexual Desire or Libido, Arousal, Orgasm, and Sexual Pain.

Basic Issue

Common Specific Medical Problems

Women Men
Desire / Libido Low estrogen or Depression Low Testosterone
Arousal Low Vaginal Lubrication Erectile Dysfunction
Orgasm Inability to Achieve Orgasm Premature Ejaculation
Sexual Pain Vulvodynia; Interstitial Cystitis Peyronie's Disease

Many people confuse libido and arousal. A libido problem is the lack of interest in sex while an arousal problem is a physical difficulty with performing sexually. For example, a man can have strong libido but, if he suffers from erectile dysfunction, he may not be able to become aroused enough to enjoy sex.

Male Sexual Dysfunction

Male sexual dysfunction is dominated by three conditions: erectile dysfunction, low libido, and ejaculation disorders, most commonly premature ejaculation.

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is now a well-understood and treatable sexual dysfunction for most men. The success of PDE-5 inhibitors such as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra, have proven that the cause of ED for most men has biological origins.

Libido & Testosterone

Low Libido in men can have a variety of sources including stress, depression, lack of sleep, and excessive alcohol or drug use. With men over 40, it can often be caused by low testosterone levels. Visit our page on Low T where you can learn if a treatment regimen may be right for you.

Ejaculatory Dysfunctions

There are three primary ejaculatory dysfunctions: delayed ejaculation, retrograde ejaculation, and premature ejaculation. Premature ejaculation is not only the most common ejaculation dysfunction, but it is also the most common sexual dysfunction overall, affecting approximately 30% of men.

Peyronie's disease is a disorder of the penis involving the growth of scar tissue in the penis affecting approximately 5-10% of men.  This scar tissue often causes pain, erect shape change, erectile dysfunction, indentation, loss of girth and shortening.
