can you take viagra daily like cialis

Can you take Viagra daily? It is one of many medications that can be used to treat erectile dysfunction. It’s been proven effective as a long-term treatment for ED.

However, some men may wonder if it’s safe to take Viagra daily, similar to how certain doses of Cialis can be taken daily.

Quick FAQs

Viagra, which is also known by its generic name sildenafil, is a medication that helps to treat erectile dysfunction.

Viagra can be taken daily as long as users don't exceed a single dose within 24 hours.

Viagra should not be taken with medications such as nitrates or other ED meds.

With any medication, it’s important to understand how they should be used and what potential side effects may happen. Here’s what to know about whether you can take Viagra daily.

What is Viagra?

Viagra, also known by its generic name, sildenafil, is a medication primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction and certain types of pulmonary arterial hypertension.

The drug was first introduced to the market in 1998, available through prescription for men 18 years and older. Its blue, diamond-shaped pills have become recognizable worldwide.

How does Viagra work?

Viagra works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of blood vessels that supply the penis with blood.

This helps allow for increased blood flow to the penis, making an erection possible upon sexual stimulation.

Pro Tip: VitaFLUX Nitric Oxide Booster is a supplement that's clinically proven to promote erectile functioning.

It should be kept in mind that Viagra does not cure any underlying causes of ED, nor does it increase sexual desire.

Viagra comes in three different dosages. Those dosages are:

  • 25mg
  • 50mg
  • 100mg

The typical recommended starting dose of Viagra is 50 mg. It should be taken as needed about one hour before sex.

Your doctor will determine the best dosage for you, considering factors such as your age, overall health, and potential interactions with other medications you're taking.

Depending on its effectiveness and how well your body tolerates it, the dosage may be increased to a maximum recommended dose of 100 mg or decreased to 25 mg.

It's essential never to adjust your dosage without consulting a healthcare professional.

Can you take Viagra daily?

When we asked Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Wang Lushun from Arete Ortho, he stated, “Generally speaking, taking Viagra (sildenafil) every day is not recommended unless specifically prescribed by a healthcare professional. Viagra is primarily used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) and is typically taken as needed, approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour before sexual activity. It is not intended for daily use as a performance enhancer or recreational drug.”

Potential risks and side effects

Like all medications, Viagra can cause side effects. Dr. Lushun mentioned the following as potential side effects of Viagra:

  • Headaches
  • Flushing
  • Indigestion
  • Dizziness
  • Stuffy nose
  • Nausea

Dr. Lushun further added, “These side effects are usually mild and temporary. However, there can be more serious risks associated with Viagra, especially when used inappropriately or without medical supervision. Risks do not necessarily increase with daily use but depend on individual factors such as underlying health conditions and interactions with other medications.”

The Benefits of Taking Viagra Daily

Regular and successful use of Viagra can boost confidence and reduce anxiety related to sexual performance, leading to improved mental health and relationships.

From a physical perspective, Viagra can help maintain a healthy and satisfying sex life. It enables men who struggle with erectile dysfunction to experience a normal and pleasurable sexual experience.

How quickly does Viagra work?

Generally, Viagra starts working within 30 to 60 minutes after ingestion. It’s ideal to take the medication on an empty stomach, as taking it after a high-fat meal may affect how fast it kicks in.

Can I take Viagra if I don’t have erectile dysfunction?

Viagra should only be taken when prescribed by a healthcare professional. It's intended for those with erectile dysfunction, and using it without a need can lead to unnecessary side effects.

What if Viagra doesn't work for me?

Not all medications work the same for everyone. If Viagra isn't effective for you, communicate with your healthcare provider. They may adjust your dosage or suggest alternative treatments.

Can I take Viagra with other medications?

Some medications can interact with Viagra, potentially causing harmful effects. According to Dr. Lushun, the following medications can interact with Viagra:

  • Nitrates - When taken with viagra, it can cause blood pressure to get dangerously low and can potentially be fatal.
  • Alpha blockers - Similar to nitrates, alpha blockers can cause blood pressure to get too low when taken with Viagra. Doctors may advise a lower dose of one of the medications.
  • PDE5 inhibitors - Taking two ED medications at the same time will increase the risk of priapism and other serious side effects.

Dr. Lushun also noted, “Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements.”

Does the body build up a tolerance to Viagra if taken daily?

When asked about this question, Dr. Lushun stated, “There is limited evidence regarding the long-term effects of daily Viagra use. However, it is important to note that Viagra is not intended for continuous, daily use unless specifically prescribed by a healthcare professional.”

He further explained, “Taking Viagra daily without medical guidance can lead to an increased risk of side effects and potential complications. Moreover, there is a possibility of developing tolerance to the medication over time, which may result in reduced efficacy.”

When to Consult Your Doctor

If you experience severe side effects such as an erection lasting over four hours, sudden vision loss, or hearing loss, seek immediate medical attention.

Regular check-ins with your doctor are also crucial to adjust your dosage as needed, based on your body's response to the medication.
